Day 21: San Francisco, CA

I am cold!

This is from somebody that lives in the East Coast. It is the middle of summer and I am not prepared for this weather. Our trip had started from Las Vegas to Honolulu then Los Angeles. We left Las Vegas at a whopping temp of 115 degrees! Those places that are warm enough not to pack any long sleeved shirt. Sweaters are last on my worry list. Now, I understood that the weather here kept of fluctuating from warm to cold in an instant that the need to layer up on clothing is a necessity.

We got to the Embarcadero train station by noon time. We took the half hour train (the BART) from the Fremont station. One of the things that impressed me about Cali was public transportation. It is so reliable that trains and buses were well coordinated that transfers are a breeze. Between the bus, cable cars and the trains, there is a lot of ways to get to your destination. The fare is cheap and reasonable. You don't need a car to live here.

The first stop was on the nearest Old Navy to get some extra sweaters and socks for me and Madzie. The city is bigger than I anticipated. It is a pedestrian city that it is quite easy to get around using the cable cars. Forget about driving here. Good thing we decided to get around on foot.

We walked around Chinatown and had a late lunch. The Chinatown here is bigger, more spreadout than the one in NYC. This place has so many inclined streets, it felt that I burned all the carbs that I ate earlier. The place is swarming with tourists like me.
Here are some of the photos from the trip:

Intricate cables for the cable car.

Too many tourist in the summer.

This the closest we got to the Golden Gate Bridge.

SF Chinatown Public Library.

Motorcycle galore.

The last train going back to Fremont leaves around 7 pm. Not to be rushed, we took an earlier train back. Since it was rush hour, I assume that we will be in a packed train. Not quite, we got seats. Commuters probably go to work earlier to catch up with the office hours in the East Coast, at least before the stock market closes. Most likely they leave the office before 5pm. Nice.

Everytime we travel to a new place, I usually made sure that I am well oriented in the area. This is important when we are taking the public transportation. I hate to take out the map in the middle of the street and look like dazed and very confused. It just screams bloody tourist. But this time, I got lazy in research that we didn't make the day out of it. We have been on the road long enough that I just want to stay indoors and waste the day in a warm bed. This is the same pattern I had when we were backpacking to Europe. On the last leg, I just decided to stay in bed longer than the usual that waking up on a bright day, in a warm room with white curtains and bed sheets, hearing the church bells in Florence seem to be close to heaven.

Tomorrow's plan is to go to the Fisherman's Wharf or try to catch a ferry to Alcatraz. I need to do more homework! And they say, I am supposed to be on vacation.
