Day 14: Honolulu

Monday.

After the road trip yesterday, we decided to get a rental car to continue our leisurely drive around the island. A car is a viable option if you want to see the rest of the island. Parking is scarce and expensive in Waikiki. J found a cheaper parking option 3 to 4 blocks away from our place. It would cost us $25 per day plus tips if we used the valet parking area close by.

When J picked up the car, we rented the cheapest one available. I was surprised that the rental car company gave us a convertible. I would love to have the roof down through the drive around the city but we have a baby on board. The sun can be intense in the middle of the day. She might roast back there. We drove the car with the roof down at least to the brunch place and put it up once we are hit the road. As usual, Madison slept once we got through the highway.

The brunch place in this local diner called Eggs'n Things. Its known for cheap and good food. It's so popular that the line goes all the way out the door. We have to wait for 10 minutes before we got seated. Its open 24-7, the early and late riser special is a bargain even in Waikiki prices. This place is well recommended by the locals.

The menu is simple pancakes, crepes and rice meals. What separates this from the rest of the diner here is the special syrup. The selection of guava, boysenberry (the local raspberry) and pineapple was too exotic enough for me.

I ordered a simple banana crepe and J had the rice meal with corn beef hash. The waitress recommended him to put some salsa on the corn beef. OMG! It's heaven. We left with a take home meal that we will bring to the beach and picnic.

After yesterday driving around the eastern area of the island, we decided to see the Leeward area (western) part of it. The map shows that the last public beach was all the way to Kaena Point.

Here are some pictures I took along the way:

Typical Honolulu landscape. All mountains and skyscrapers.

I thought it was a house but it is some satellite station. There was a sign pointing to a government facility.

Ain't no mountain high enough...

Kaena Point Beach.

Our plan was to go back to Ko'Olina beach before heading back home. As usual, the rush hour traffic had started, we re-routed ourselves to Lanikai beach instead. We watched through the sunset, changed at the Kailua facilities and went back to our place.
We weren't able to go back to North Shore since there wasn't any shortcut from Kaena Point. We tried to find one but we got lost among the mountains. We drove through the narrow unpaved roads (at this point we ignored the GPS, bad idea) till we got through a dead end. The only way was to go south of the island across the highway. Bummer!

Tomorrow is our last full day on the island. I am determined to get a Matsumoto shaved ice before we head back to the main land.
