Day 15: Oahu

Tuesday.

This is our last day in Hawaii. We are determined to make the day out of it. We wanted to start our day of going to the beach and head over on driving through North Shore.

We started our day with a brunch on a local Korean place called Gina's BBQ. It was cheap and had great food but the place is a long trek from Waikiki. It is not convenient on foot.

One of the reasons I love going to the Windward area was the Pali Highway. You have to drive through the mountains and pass through the tunnels. The view can be breathtaking. We decided to put down the roof from the convertible. It is early in the morning and cloudy. The sun just barely peaking out of the clouds. From the weather forecast, it should be around 85 degrees and sunny.

More photos from the drive to Windward area.

She didn't mind the drive with the roof down.

Pali Highway. Parked in the lookout area.

There is limited street parking in Lanikai beach. Obviously, owners of the residential area don't want you to park in front of their property. It is public space so they can't say anything. One of the solutions was to plant trees in front so cars won't be able to fit in.

When we were looking for a parking space, we saw a cop in shorts circling the area. One of the locals stopped his vehicle in front of us warning us to park the car properly. I asked if we were allowed to park on the side street. He said it is fine as long the tires are not sticking out in the paved street. J wasn't comfortable leaving the vehicle eventhough we were parked on the other side of the street across from the bike path.

Typical day at the beach. Love this place...

It was a good beach day. There were a lot of folks frolicking in the beach. Madison got some folks their attention. She likes to stare at people and smiles at them when she gets their attention. This is always the ice breaker whenever we are in a public area.

We left Lanikai and went to Kailua to rinse off and change. We got done sometime after 2 pm. We are now on our way to North Shore but we are making stops at Kahuku beach and then to Matsumoto for some more shaved ice.

Kahuku aquaculture.
The town of Kahuku is known for their shrimp. It used to (or maybe still is) an agricultural part of Oahu. They are known to harvest shrimps. You would notice all the trucks parked at the side street where most of the locals eat their lunch. We were told to find the Famous Kahuku Shrimp truck since they have an extensive menu (you somewhat have an option to order squid) to choose from and they are open late. Most of the trucks close at 5 pm.

I wonder how much is their overhead...

Oil and Garlic Shrimp plate. Yummy!

By the time we got to Matsumoto, they are already close. We went to the one next door, Aoki. It was ok. At least, I was able to get my shaved ice fix. We drove further north till we got to north shore. This is another area that I noticed that has expensive houses. This place is popular during winter for his high waves. It is the surfing mecca for surf professionals.

Our trip had come to an end. Our flight will be in the afternoon. Most likely we are packing in the morning and only have time for brunch.

Tomorrow will be one last entry of Hawaii. We are flying back to Los Angeles to go on a road trip going all the way to San Francisco but we have to detour to see my Lola in San Jose.
