Longstreet House - Holmdel, NJ

Let me take you to a time wrap and get a glimpse on how a well off farm in rural Holmdel, New Jersey look like in 1890.

The original Longstreet farmhouse was built in 1785, additions were done later on which included a 2 story unit with a porch and second floor bedrooms. The property was owned by the generations of Longstreet family till it was sold to the state in 1960. The state re-created the typical farm life in the late 1800's and opened the farm to the public.

OLD STRUCTURE

Notice the low ceilings and small windows.

Considered as a modern kitchen at its time. Notice the water pump next to the sink with the heater and stove connected.

Walkway through the kitchen.

NEW STRUCTURE

The extension was built in the 1800's, unlike the old part of the house, it has modern conveniences that eliminated the use of fireplaces and have a pipe that sends the heat on the second floor bedrooms. It is also more spacious, have higher ceilings and the owners focused more on aesthetics, notice that all the rooms in the add on area have fancy wallpapers.

The facade blended in on the original house but added doric columns.

The fireplace is now replaced with a heater through the pipes.

The last room occupant was the owner's nephew, the room has a masculine feel to it.

The formal dining room has been warmly decorated. Note that the furnishings are not from the original house but were the norm during that period.

Below is the one of the detail of the wallpaper in the dining area. The Japanese motifs were popular those days. The picture of the Japanese woman in costume looks like a comic book caricature. It reminds me of the impressionist period in Paris were the Japonais were the rage theme at the time.

INSIDE THE BARN
Based on the workstations in the barn, I just wonder how many tenants that run this estate which looked self sufficient.

The Longstreet Farm is free and open to the public, next to the farm is a sizable picnic facility and visitor area. It is a great place to enjoy a family picnic on an open grass lawn.
