NYC: Museum Mile 2009

Museum Mile in NYC is a yearly spring event where major museums in 5th Avenue were open to the public for free. The city closes down 5th Avenue starting from 82nd to 105th streets to pedestrians and street performers; also it allows children to make street chalk drawing designs.

The event is only open from 6-9 pm. Prepare to wait in line. The line usually extends a whole block. Also, note that only certain exhibits were allowed for public viewing. Do not expect to see everything in the Met, certain areas are closed. To see them, you have to visit on regular hours.

The line at Neue Galerie, I waited here an hour.

I usually get to see only 2 museums. This year, I chose Neue Galerie for its Expressionism exhibit and the Met Museum for its Francis Bacon exhibit.

The 3 hours of free viewing for the participating museums is not enough, I spent an hour in line for the Neue Galerie, about half hour to view the collections, another half hour to walk down to the Met Museum and spend the rest of the time leisurely view its collection.

If you plan to attend next year, plan accordingly, better yet, come and wait in line early.
