Travel Journal Oahu 2009 Day 1

It is our 3rd trip to Honolulu. We fell in love with the island that we can't get enough of it. There is always a list to things that we did not do and vowed to come back next year. What is the difference from our previous trips? This time I will meet my sisters in Honolulu and we are all staying at the same hotel. It is a family trip without my Mother. She refused to travel this far.

From Corner Turn

We were set to stay in the Waikiki vicinity. We were scheduled to stay on a nearby hotel next to the International Market and eventually transfer to our time share. To be able to see the whole island, we decided to rent a car, the only available (also affordable) option was a 7 seat Ford Explorer. Not much room for luggage but enough to have a seat for everyone.

Day 1: Arriving in the Honolulu
Our flight was scheduled for an early flight with a transfer from Los Angeles. We arrived in Honolulu around noon time. We are all exhausted from lack of sleep. The night before we were scrambling on last minute packing, got to the airport at the crack of dawn and in between the flight we have to deal with Madison. She cries every time she has to shift. We had to put her as a lap child. Children that are 2 years old and younger are allowed to travel sitting on their parent's lap with no charge.
We picked up our rental car and head over to Ala Moana Mall for a quick bite. We have to check in to our hotel soon so Joe can pick up the rest of our group. Our can did not have enough space for luggage and we have to adjust the fold down seats.
While looking for a parking spot, we were moving on a snail pace that most cars behind us had changed lanes. Most streets in the Waikiki area are one way streets and finding a parking spot can be painstaking since you have to go around the area. On one left turn, we heard a loud thud. Looking our side, we saw that a guy in a moped hit us on the passenger side. It is a minor skirmish but enough to dent the door. The guy thought he can over take our car by hitting the gas pedal, he did not have enough push.
There were a couple of witnesses that started calling 911. I did call myself to make sure. Nobody seems to be injured besides the moped guy bleeding from the scratches. His aging moped is still in working order. The cops came along with the paramedics and the firemen. The cop was so laid back that he asked what happened, interviewed both sides and gave us a card with the information on the police report. The paramedics and the firemen were turned away. We are really lucky it is a minor skirmish.
We left off with the officer telling us that it was a no fault accident. He gave us the information on to obtain the police report. The next step was to call the car rental office to check if we need to turn in out car. It is only a fender bender and still in good driving condition. The only instructions were to fill out the form from the glove compartment and call our insurance company to inform them about the accident.
Did we take a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)? Nope. We declined it.
We are concerned about the results but I figure out that our insurance would pay for the rest of the damages but we still are liable for the deductible. Once we know the results, it will be a separate entry.
We were able to check in with no hassles. We made an early night and slept early at 8 pm. It is the start of our holiday and we tried to let the accident incident far behind.
No pictures available on this day. We are too exhausted for taking pictures. We need to recharge for the next day.
