cobbler 1 (ˈkɒblə) — (noun) a person who makes or mends shoes
I stumbled upon an interview from an old world cobbler from Montegranaro, Italy. I didn't realize that there is a different world out there in terms of custom made shoes.
The process do seem to be complicated and time consuming but if you prefer quality versus quantity and have a lot of free time (and money) then this one is probably for you.
- The client is shown different kinds of styles and models to choose from.
- The cobbler takes on measurements and creates a wood replica of the client's foot.
- They only use white leather so it can be uniquely stained by hand. The process takes about 3 weeks.
- They etch the client's name in the bottom of the shoes.
- The client has to go on 3 fittings, overall, the process takes about 5 months.
- Average custom made shoes starts around EUR 4,000
- Handmade shoes if maintained well lasts about 15-20 years.
Shoe Buying Tips
- Well made shoes should have 2 separate stitching and not glued.
- Look for leather quality. Good leather is soft and supple. Bad leather creases easily and shows cracking.
- Don't wear the same shoes 2 days in a row. Collected moisture needs to dry out.
- Shine twice or once a week to maintain luster.
- Store shoes in a shoe tree to maintain form.
