Book Review No 6: Noble House

Title:         Noble House
Author:     James Clavell
Genre:      Action, Adventure

Synopsis:

It was more than a century later after the foundations were originally set by the first Tai-pan of what has become the present day HongKong. The Noble House is the biggest business establishment in the British colony in Asia which is led by Ian Dunross. Now that the century old establishment is in distress, his arch-rival has been trying to bid for to takeover the Noble House with the help of an American conglomerate that set their eyes on establishing a foothold on Asia through Hong Kong.

Ian Dunross, Tai-Pan of the Noble House

He is ruthless but an enigmatic leader that likes fast cars, winning horses and has an affinity for foreign languages. He is a direct descendant of the first Tai-pan, Dirk Struan. Unlike his predecessors, he had the foresight of taking the company public thus infusing the funds that Noble House needed.

Like it or Hate it

Hated it. The book is too thick, it has too many plots, too many characters and the story line is so convoluted. Why did James Clavell made it so complicated? The part where the espionage between the KGB and CIA should have been obliterated and saved it for another book. The only plot that I am interested in was the kidnappings, shady underworld business deals, Casey and Paul Choy.

Other than that, I have expected more of Ian Dunross. Somehow, I expect him to be a hybrid of Dirk Struan, more cunning, more ruthless, with more heart. Unlike Dirk, he had everything set up for him. It might be of a different age and time but it still dealt with greed and espionage.

If you had followed the first book titled Tai-Pan, there were 4 coins that were given to Dirk Struan in change of future "favors". So far, 2 of those coins were collected and 1 more came up through Paul Choy, whom used it for establishing the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. It hasn't mentioned who else has the last coin, it may show up on the last of Clavell's Asian saga, Gai-Jin. It is another thick book, I hope I would be able to finish it unlike this one.
