Ring Mishap

It has been a while since I wore my engagement ring. The last time I probably wore it was from another wedding event when I was 5 months pregnant. I was so bloated once that I decided to take it off and never put it back since till we got invited again to a wedding event last weekend.

It was a bit tight when I put on the ring, once it hit the knuckle I gave it an awkward tug and it went through fine. It didn't bother me at all during the reception. It was fine till I have to take it off. A little bit of tugging and twisting didn't help my cause. My husband suggested out put on olive oil but the twisting made my finger swollen that it would be impossible to slip off through the knuckles. Panic hit through me when I looked at my ring finger suddenly felt tingly. For a moment, I had visions of a faceless doctor telling me that they have to amputate my ring finger due to muscle damage. Eek!

As hubby and baby slept soundly, I was wide awake with my finger throbbing. I thought of going to the emergency room if it got worse but I know it would cost a bundle if I did that so I had that thought as a last resort. I browsed through online and there were suggestions of putting your hand on ice to take off the swelling and put on some olive oil. Some entry swore off on using windex. I tried it but my ring finger got worse from further twisting. The last entry on those advise column was to take the ring to the nearest jeweler, if not available, to the nearest fire station since they all have the tools to cut through metals.

The nearest jeweler from where I live opened at 9 am, I called and explained my dillema. The lady on the phone responded, "Oh, we do it all the time". I drove myself and showed my swollen ring finger to the jeweler. He went to work, no questions asked. In 2 minutes, he cut through the ring and I sighed with relief. I asked how much owed him, he said free of charge. As for my ring, I asked if he could fixed it, he said yes and would be able to resize it too for a small price of $40. I thought that is a much amiable amount compared to the bill I would incur if I decided to rush to the ER.

Lesson learned, if it doesn't fit, don't force it. Hah!
